Running A Business Is Like Conducting A Symphony

Running A Business Is Like Conducting A Symphony

Whenever in life, I got a chance to meet the CEO of a company, no matter what industry it was, I found them to be diversely skilled. They possessed the ability to be anybody from among their employees and it amazed me.

How could someone know the science of how rockets work, be an expert trader, work on automobile engineering, and make gadgets for human body? Well, Elon Musk does.

This article is not motivating you to be what Elon Musk is. Instead, this article is about how an entrepreneur has to have a versatile skill set in order to succeed, how every part of the business should be learnt and understood before stepping into entrepreneurship, and why is it important to do this.

Starting a Business

Starting a business sounds like rainbows and unicorns to some of us and the glamour attached to entrepreneurship in the recent times makes it look very appealing to start a business. However, you may have to fail once or twice or even more before you can run a business successfully. Fail forward and fail often as failure is a symbol of effort.

The different departments of a Business need to be ideally handled and governed by a businessman. Let’s take a closer look at how mastering different domains of a business are crucial in establishing, and then running a business.

  1. Sales are undoubtedly the oxygen of your business. They are the sole reason why your business exist. You can’t take risks in this domain. No experiments, and no first timer strategies should be used. Well, what should be done then? Go find a sales job, do it, get good at it, and Et Voila! In short, you have to polish your sales skill, and be as good as a sales specialist.
  • Procurement gone wrong will cost you a great deal. It’s even worse than not getting sales. Corporate world is ruthless and you will be replaced immediately if you can’t fulfill what you promise. Make sure your supply chain department is working right with the numbers and the products that customers want. Mitigate the issues in supply chain and make sure your production never has a backlog or that you are never stuck with dead inventory.
  • Accounting done right can save you a lot of money. It can also earn you a lot more if done in a right way. Every year, earnings and expenditure data is used to project the numbers for upcoming years. This data not only contributes to important decisions for the upcoming financial year but it also helps you scale your business. This is one department that is often overlooked especially during difficult periods as no one wants to hear bad news.  Commit to spending some time with the accounts department, do regular meetings, and keep yourself updated with the numbers at the end of every week no matter that financial status of the company.
  • Marketing is a pathway to becoming a brand. Your goal should be becoming a worldwide brand where everyone knows and trusts you for who you are. Anything you sell, people want to buy it and first in the line. How to go there? Branding, marketing, and advertising. Put yourself out there and tell people that you exist. Spend some time alone and feel the pain point of your customers and provide solutions.  The best thing that every marketing/copywriting book will teach you is, people ALWAYS buy with emotions. Learn to use this fact for greater good!
  • Hiring is a very crucial part of any business, and it is something that either makes you or breaks you. Hire people who want to learn. Hire those who are in the initial stages of their career and hire the experts for the important positions in your company. Your workforce should be passionate about what they do. Ease them off, ensure a good workplace culture, and have a keen eye while recruiting.  Never be obliged to hire someone or hire someone as an obligation to others. Keeping staff that are not contributing to the organization is a disservice to both you and the employee.

The Bottom Line

Your business is like Music and its departments are like different instruments of an orchestra with you being the conductor. Every instrument is at your beck and call, give right signals, make good moves, and know what you are doing, and it will result in beautiful music that results in profits.

There’s no secret to success, it’s all about doing what we all know, consistently. Period.  But often we forget or get entangled in the daily tasks while fighting the fires and juggling our responsibilities as business owners, often missing what is most important.
